Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9-inch baking pan.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, cream the butter and egg until light and fluffy, then add coffee, buttermilk, and vanilla.
- Gradually fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the baking pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
- In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, and heavy cream over medium heat, stirring until thickened.
- In a small bowl, mix brewed coffee with powdered sugar until smooth.
- Poke holes in the cooled cake and pour warm caramel sauce over it, then drizzle with coffee mixture.
- Slice and serve warm or at room temperature, optionally topping with whipped cream or ice cream.
